    TONSILLECTOMY(2)

Normal symptoms
The wounds at the back of the throat look sloughy yellow white and there may be minor bad breath. Pain is a feature for 7-10 days post-op and requires regular analgesics. Bleeding is NOT normal and must be reported to a Doctor.

Follow-up
Most patients are seen 1 month post-op to ensure complete recovery.

Complications
Bleeding can occur in the immediate postoperative period whilst in hospital. If this occurs and does not settle spontaneously a return to theatre to stop the bleeding may be necessary. Sometimes if dietary intake  is poor after the procedure (often due to pain) infection of the wounds gives rise to bleeding at about 1 week post-op. Report this to a doctor as you will require admission to hospital

If things go wrong…………
Severe pain which is not controlled by oral pain killers (such that one cannot take fluids or eat) and ANY bleeding should be reported to a doctor. If you are ill admission to the Royal Berkshire Hospital under my care may be necessary.
