GROMMETS(2)
Normal symptoms
There may be slight mucoid discharge from the ears but usually they are dry. Hearing may be restored immediately but often the final result is not obtained for several days until the middle ear lining has returned to normal. The grommets come out of the ear drum by themselves after 9 - 12 months by which time in the majority of children eustachian tube function will have improved so they do not suffer further glue ear.
Follow-up
A hearing test is performed 2 months following grommet insertion.
If things go wrong…………
Complications following grommet insertion are rare. The grommet may however become infected with ear discharge, fall out early, become blocked or leave a hole in the ear drum after extrusion.
